What
Is Your Opinion of You?
Before
you read, just know this. This is not a
feel-good, pop psychology “positive thinking” approach. It will be, I hope, a wake-up call to getting
to know ‘self’ better.
If
you are like most, you have formed your opinions of yourself based on what
others have said about you.
“Oh,
you’re the singer of the family.”
“You,
why you couldn’t keep a job if it was chained to your neck.”
“You’re
the smart one.”
“You’re
the dumb one.”
“You’re
clumsy.”
“You
are so coordinated.”
“You
are just like your father.”
“You
never take risks.”
And
these opinions stick around, because somewhere along the way we started to
believe them and embrace them.
People
imagine us in ways that suit them, whether it suits us or not. And that doesn’t mean you have to listen to
their opinions and especially believe their opinions.
So,
this ‘opinion’ you hold of yourself … what is it based on?
What
a great question. And that question
demands to be dealt with.
The
stories we tell ourselves about ourselves tend to confine us. They tend to suck us in and lock us down
based on whatever narrative we tell, and continue to tell.
It
is a nasty circle, and it can change.
First
– determine what you are not! Set
boundaries. Stop the chants inside your
own head.
Second
– find a way to do some re-framing of your story. The beginning point for that journey is the
old saying – Know Thyself.
And
that is the hardest journey you will ever begin.
You
can survive that trip – just buckle down and do the hard work. Seek professional help if you need it. And come to grips with who you are NOT and
then who you ARE will start to come out of hiding.
Success
to you along the way.
This is
my
morning
reflection.
