Keep Throwing Darts

Figuring out life is the GREAT challenge for all of us.  And now, at my ripe old age of 71 I have come to this conclusion. 

We keep throwing darts at the dart board.  The goal is to hit the bull’s eye.  I rarely hit the bull’s eye, but I kept throwing.

It took me a while to figure out what my real magnificent obsession in life was.  I’ve chased many obsessions.  To name a few …

~A great minister of music

~A producer of musicals and dramas

~A great drummer

~A stellar business man

~President of a certain publishing company by age 45

~Minister to ministers of music

~Writer of best-sellers in the motivational and self-development vein

~A great encourager

~A great music clinician

~A world-famous orchestral director

Oh, there have been other pursuits along the way.  And where have I ended up?

It hit me one day that in all of my pursuing, in all of the dreams I chased, the one thing I kept coming back to was this … I simply wanted to help people.  I wanted to encourage people. 

I accomplished that in some ways through many of these pursuits, and for that I am grateful.  However, once I settled on my major chief aim in life, my magnificent obsession, I feel I began to make some real progress in my own sense of self-fulfillment and had a sharply defined focus of how I wanted to spend the rest of my life. 

I believe that was the day I quit throwing darts and began focusing on the one talent in my hands and in my heart that mattered most.  I began focusing on ways to benefit mankind, to help and encourage mankind.  I realized that many people I met had a great need for validation, self-esteem, self-confidence and to know that there was at least one other human being in this world who cared for them.

I must confess, it took a lot of dart-throwing to finally narrow my focus, my aim and see the bigger-than-life target for which I had been aiming all along.  I am very thankful I discovered this magnificent obsession.

Now, my friend, I turn to you.  Have you been throwing darts in search of a target, an obsession?  By all means, throw those darts.  Throw as many darts as you can.  Some will stick, some will fall off.  Some will hit dead center and some will miss by a country mile. 

And when that fine day comes, and you finally hit upon that one obsession for which you have been seeking, then stop throwing.  Look closely at what you’ve discovered, and set your cap for a fresh journey toward your life’s purpose.

And become that person you have desired to become.  Move in the direction of your dominant goal and dream.  It matters not your age, now how much money you’ve spent, now where you live, what your dress is, your language nor your favorite food.  The main focus for the rest of your life is this … how can I best serve mankind with this fresh focus of my attention.

That is graduation day, my friend.

A World with No Bosses

A World with No Bosses

What if you and I lived in a world with no bosses?  What if there was no one around to tell us what to do, how to do, when to do, where to go?

You could do anything.  It’s up to your own initiative. 

So, what?

Do you have the drive, the initiative to go make something, or to make something of yourself?  If you only had to please yourself, could you?

I’m living that to a small degree at the moment.  I have no editor or publisher breathing down my neck demanding the next manuscript or the fixes on the last one turned in.  I write what I want, when I want and lately, because I’ve been on medical leave, I’ve had a grand time.  I set an agenda every day, write every day, read every day and it is supreme. 

Could you do that?  Could you make up your life as you go? 

Would you start something – a company, a non-profit, a charitable institution, a school with a unique specialty? 

Would you bake all day?  Open a restaurant?  Make the best ham-n-eggs in the world?

Would you go around the country and speak to all kinds of people with your message of hope, or instruction or whatever your message is?

Would you design and build a new kind of transportation?  Would you bicycle everywhere you go?

The secret to what I’m talking about is this … ‘what would you do if nobody told you what to do – all day, every day?

It’s fun to be whimsical with this idea, and it kind of points us in some directions of where our mind takes us when we let go of the reigns.

Oh, you wanna know what I would do?  I would keep writing and producing my message of hope, encouragement and inspiration through writing, podcasting and speaking. 

I still think there are a lot of people out there who need a word of hope.

That’s what I would do.

Of Course You're Afraid

I’ve written and posted blogs that made me fearful.  I’ve wondered, pondered and fretted if I was telling too much, or stating something so off-base as to embarrass myself or my family. 

Batters face fear.  Will the ball hit me in the head?  Will the umpire be fair in calling the pitches?  What if I strike out … on national

television?  What if I trip while running to first base?

New jobs cause fear.  Can I produce to their expectations?  Will they like me?  Will I get along with my co-workers?  Are my ideas as good as I once thought? 

Driving can be a frightful experience.  Will that truck stay in his lane?  Will the guy behind me pass me and get off my bumper?  Can I stay awake until I reach my destination?  Will my car get me there without breaking down? 

Such uncertainties.  What a conundrum. 

And we do life anyway. 

Life is a gamble.  Waking up every day presents us with a number of fear-provoking opportunities.  And we do it anyway.

Pathfinders face fear every day.  They are headed to unknown territories, new vistas, new creations, new product launches, and they are not absolutely certain of success.  Often, there is a lot of money on the line, and what if we lose it all?

Can you imagine the fear Neil Armstrong faced as he prepared to walk on the moon?

And yet he faced his fears, his angst, and did the thing for which he was trained.  He faced the uncertainties of space.  He trusted his co-workers, his training and his own skillset.  He imagined new horizons and he wanted to see what was beyond the next rock. 

He overcame fear.

So, to all the fearful and the uncertain ones among us, I say this.  You are in good company as a fearful one. 

Now, lace up your shoes, weigh your choices, the possible outcomes, and the intriguing possibilities of success.

And if you still want to go and be and do, then face your fears and do just that.
