Don't Live a Small Life

Don’t Live a Small Life

Poet Mary Oliver once wrote, “I don’t want to live a small life.”

I like that.  It works for me.

So, let’s kick this around for a bit.  Just how does one live a large life?

Since I write to a diverse audience, I’ll not talk in terms of expenditures, travel, and lavish lifestyle.  Rather, let’s consider what every common man and common woman can do to enlarge their life.

The first gateway to a large life is books.  Read.  Libraries are hard to find in the typical new-build American home these days.  How sad.  I told a friend today, “If I don’t read, I don’t write or create.”  I live and die by my reading habits.

Reading engages the mind and the imagination.  We learn a broader vocabulary and reading can actually enhance one’s intelligence.  Just read!

If you can’t travel, rent or stream some great travel videos on the internet.  I have been to London, yet have watched a couple London videos numerous times, and it’s like being there again.  And I’ve seen videos on Italy, France, Ireland, Germany, and many other lands.  It’s almost like being there, and you gain a broader view of our world.  Just watch videos.

Next unto reading, for me, is listening to audio books.  My subscription to www.Audible.com is one of my most prized and smartest investments.  You can listen to biographies, novels, self-development, how-to and a thousand other subjects of interest.  I have an audio book playing during much of my drive time to and from work.

You can readily see that living a larger life has to do with self-development.  I haven’t mentioned education, higher degrees, seminars and opportunities in those genres.

For now, this is enough.  Remember this.

A life is a terrible thing to waste.  Live large.

This is my
morning reflection.
