No Ping ... No Pong

No Ping … No Pong

I was a better than average ping pong player in my younger days.  My friend Mike Graham and I spent countless hours in my basement, and when our family gathered for Christmas, ping pong always made its way into our activities.

Here’s the thing … In ping pong, if you hit the ball, that’s the ‘ping’ part.  You need someone on the other side to ‘pong’ the ball back to you. Otherwise, you’ll chase that little ball all over the room.

If you are waiting on the ‘pong’ side, you’ll wait forever if nobody comes along and ‘pings’ to you.

We need each other to play an effective game of ping pong.  I create a widget and I need you to buy my widget.  You make a gadget, and you need me to buy your gadget.  Do you see how ping pong works?

Sometimes, I think we have forgotten how to play ping pong.  It takes two, you see.

If I ping you,
               and ping you,
                       and ping you,
with no response, sooner or later, I’ll move on to the next player.  Maybe they will return one of my pings.

One way conversations, after all, are nothing more than monologues.

I’m a writer.  I ping my blogs out into this universe.  If no one ever read them, I’d stop writing.  Thankfully, that is not happening.  I get ponged on occasion, and I love that.

Let’s play a game of ping pong.

Your serve.

This is my
morning reflection.

Carry Away Small Stones

Carry Away Small Stones

This picture and quote tell a large story.  It is the incremental acts, day by day, that make a good, yeah, a great life.

A quick story:  My wife fell on ice on Feb 6 and subsequently spent 6 days in an area hospital.  Today, she moves better and a wee bit faster than she did on Feb 6.  She’s moving this mountain of pain and suffering one step, one slide of the foot at a time.  She won’t get well over night.  She won’t be well in another week.  I do think, given what I’ve seen so far, that she will be incrementally better one week from today.

Life challenges all of us.  And we overcome, get better, grow stronger, one step, one movement, one inch at a time.

It’s a marathon, not sprint.

This is my
morning reflection.

Doing by Making Mistakes

Doing by Making Mistakes

Ever since I heard this quote, I have latched onto it.  I think Neil is onto a huge principle here.

The principle is a simple one.  Do things, make mistakes in the process, and learn.

It’s not odd at all.  It’s practical.  We learn by doing.  You know that one.  And sometimes we mess up.  How many times have I messed up?  Let me count the ways, but not here, not now.

This is a short one for now.  Really, do I need to elaborate?

This is my
morning reflection.
